Charge-density-wave phase slip in NbSe3

چکیده
We have studied the phase-slip process by which charge-density-wave (CDW) current is converted to single-particle current at electrical contacts. Transport and X-ray scattering measurements indicate that an excess voltage Vps dropped between current contacts induces a large static deformation of the CDW phase. The measured Vpsand temperature-dependent phase-slip rates are consistent with a model in which CDW dislocation loops are thermally nucleated in the presence of these deformations. The effects of impurities and contact perturbations on the phase slip process are also discussed.

Charge-density-wave current conversion in submicron NbSe3 wires
We have studied the charge-density-wave (CDW) current conversion process in NbSe3 wire structures of mesoscopic dimensions. A significant reduction of the phase-slip voltage associated with this conversion is observed if the spacing between current contacts is smaller than a few &mgr;m. This reduction cannot be explained with existing models of CDW current conversion. We suggest that single pha...
متن کاملOptical investigation of the charge-density-wave phase transitions in NbSe3
We have measured the optical reflectivity R(v) of the quasi-one-dimensional conductor NbSe3 from the far infrared up to the ultraviolet between 10 and 300 K using light polarized along and normal to the chain axis. We find a depletion of the optical conductivity with decreasing temperature for both polarizations in the midto far-infrared region. This leads to a redistribution of spectral weight...
متن کاملNMR relaxation studies of electronic structure in NbSe3.
NMR spin-lattice relaxation measurements of the 'Nb resonance for each Nb site were performed on an aligned, multicrystalline NbSe3 sample at different temperatures. Results are associated with local electron densities of states for each of the three crystallographic sites, demonstrating Fermi-surface changes associated with the two charge-density-wave phase transitions. The most significant Fe...
متن کاملCharge-density wave phase-slip in niobium triselenide : dislocations and the growth of an, electronic crystal
The analogy is explored between phase-slip in charge-density wave conductors, which brings about the growth and decay of an electronic crystal, and the processes of growth and plastic flow which occur in conventional crystals. The experimental data on NbSq are re-examined, and new measurements of the voltage Vps needed to produce phase-slip at a given rate presented. It is suggested that Vps is...
متن کاملCrossover from two-dimensional to one-dimensional collective pinning in NbSe3
We have fabricated NbSe3 structures with widths comparable to the Fukuyama-Lee-Rice phase-coherence length. For samples already in the two-dimensional pinning limit, we observe a crossover from twodimensional to one-dimensional collective pinning when the crystal width is less than 1.6 mm, corresponding to the phase-coherence length in this direction. Our results show that surface pinning is ne...
